Joi Sigers loves many things, including coffee, chai tea lattes, and midday chocolate. But she has experienced great success with her blog Get Cooking, and she kindly spoke with us about awesome kitchen gadgets for the cook on your holiday gift list.
What is your professional background?
I work full-time from home as a food blogger, writer, crazy cat lady, and baseball fanatic - with varying degrees of pay.
What do you wish more people knew about cooking?
It's fun! Unlike my greatest foe (math), there are no real rules when it comes to being a cook. It's all about expressing yourself with your food. If you want to color outside of the lines, have at it! Your food, your kitchen, your rules.
Which gadget do you use the most in your kitchen?
Shhh, don't tell anyone, but I'm a kitchen gadget fanatic. I seriously think a cook sets himself/herself up for success when they outfit their kitchen with the right tools. A few of my favorite kitchen tools (as in those I couldn't possibly live without them) are my cutting board, spice grinder, cheese grater, and pastry blender.
What does being adventurous in the kitchen mean to you?
Trying different cuisines from around the world! A cook should never, ever get locked into one region's food or recipes. There's a big, delicious world out there and we should enjoy all of it, not just some of it. While my area of expertise as a Kentuckian is Southern food, I'm always experimenting with Asian, Mexican, Italian, and Indian cooking. I've fallen hard for Indian flavors!
What sort of gadgets should be on every chef's Christmas wish list this year?
When it comes to gadgets and kitchen tools, I'm a fan of buying as many as you can afford. Not only do they make life easier, but they also keep things fun and exciting. One thing that comes to mind is a great cutting board; I'm sure we could all use a fresh one!
Where do you find inspiration for your recipes?
Everywhere! Restaurants, TV, Pinterest, magazines, and even commercials.
Do readers need to buy any specific tools that are frequently used in your recipes?
If any of my recipes call for specific gadgets or tools, I try to give options. A great cheese grater is pretty much a necessity, though.
What are your must-have dishes, utensils, and cookware in the kitchen?
As a St. Louis Cardinals fan, I have red dishes and gadgets everywhere. So red is a must-have in my world. In addition to red, I'm all about iron skillets, a Cuisinart, and fun, unique kitchen tools and gadgets.
Who should be visiting the Get Cooking website and why? What can they expect to find there?
My food blog, not surprisingly, takes on my personality - which means it takes few things seriously, including itself! Get Cooking is all about the love of cooking and having fun in the kitchen. At its heart, it's about getting back to a time when the home always smelled like a home - with something magical happening in the kitchen.
Please share with us anything that you think has contributed to the success of Get Cooking.
The fun and friendly readers have contributed to its success. They keep me motivated and inspired!
